Gamashen for during winter expeditions

Below you can read the transcript of the video recorded by Henk-Jan Geel about the expedition materials.

‘I want to tell something about gamashen or leg caps that are these things.
Gamashen that you wear on the bottom of your legs and they keep snow from getting into your shoe and they can keep your legs just a little bit warmer on the bottom how do gamashen work there is a Velcro closure on them and then a zipper, you open them.
I did that here and then you have a front and a back of the gamashen the zipper that’s on the front and there’s a steel wire on the gamash that you put under your shoe and then there’s another tab that’s actually on the end of the Velcro and you can put that around your lace so then this is working out.
You first put the bottom the steel wire under your shoe.
You fasten the zipper, fasten the Velcro and put the tab under one of your laces.
So if the gamash is tight then there is a string here behind it that you can tighten, but I always leave it open because then there is maximum blood flow still through your foot or through your leg towards your foot.
Should you tighten this really hard then the blood supply stops here in a little bit because of this you have a little bit less blood supply and in arctic expeditions you want to keep maximum blood circulation so then you’re more likely to get cold toes the moment this is tight here so leave it open and that way the gamash is all right.’
