DAY 1 ARRIVAL JOKKMOKK (D)
At 3 p.m. a cab will be waiting at Luleå airport. This will take us to Jokkmokk in just over 2 hours. (This is optional to book) Jokkmokk is a small town just north of the Arctic Circle where the population doubles each year at the Jokkmokk Winter Market. You can check into the guesthouse from 3 p.m. onwards. If you arrive a little earlier, you can already leave your luggage at the reception. We will gather in the evening at 6 p.m. at Jokkmokk guesthouse where you will stay this week. You will dine with your host, who will brief you on the upcoming program.
DAY 2 SAMI EXPERIENCE AND NORTHERN LIGHT EVENING (O, L, D)
We start the day with a buffet breakfast at the guesthouse. Today you will visit our friend Anna Kuhmunen from a local family of reindeer herders. You will have the chance to meet her reindeer, taste traditional Sámi dishes and listen to stories of her life and culture. In the afternoon you will have time to explore the town on your own and visit the local museum about the mountains and the Sámi people. Or try the sauna in the guest house? After dinner, we get dressed to look for the northern lights. A snowmobile takes you outside Jokkmokk where we have a warming fire and look at the sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.
DAY 3 HUSKY TOUR AND LOCAL CULINARY SHOW (O, L, D)
The musher will pick you up at the guesthouse after breakfast and take you to their ranch just outside Jokkmokk. You will get to know their dogs and go on a dog sled ride through the winter landscape around Jokkmokk. In the afternoon, we visit Eva Gunnare. Eva is a local food connoisseur and she will introduce you to flavors of berries and plants from the area.
DAY 4 WILDLIFE WATCHING AND INAUGURATION OF JOKKMOKK WINTER MARKET (O, L, D)
After breakfast, we depart by minibus in search of the great Sarek land. Protected from the annual hunting season, Sarek elk grow larger than other elk. In winter, they migrate to the forest area east of Sarek National Park, where they find food and protection from the harsh mountain conditions. We take you to some of the moose’s favorite spots. During the day, the streets in Jokkmokk began to turn into a marketplace. In the evening you can visit the inauguration ceremony of the winter market in Jokkmokk. Activities during days 2-4 may be reversed depending on group size and weather conditions.
DAY 5 JOKKMOKK WINTER MARKET (O, D)
In the morning, your host will present the highlights of the winter market before you head out to explore on your own. Jokkmokk’s winter market has a wide range of arts and crafts, as well as exhibitions, lectures and concerts. Lunch is at the market only, where you can find a variety of options. In the evening, we meet for dinner.
DAY 6 DEPARTURE TO LULEÅ (O)
After breakfast, there will be a short time to go to the market. Visit the places you missed yesterday. Experience the festive atmosphere before you begin your trip to Luleå. Lunch is on your own. You must check out of your room by 11 a.m. at the latest, but you can leave your luggage in the luggage room if you wish and also use the common kitchen. We will leave Jokkmokk’s winter market at 1 p.m. and arrive at the airport or downtown Luleå no later than 4 p.m. (This is optional to book)
