IMMERSED IN THE CULTURE OF THE SÁMI

.

Ingrediënten:
Cultuur, Jaarmarkt, Sámi, Husky’s, Noorderlicht, Genieten & Ervaren

Get in real contact with the Sámi and experience the culture up close. Summers in the Netherlands are traditionally the time for annual fairs. From near and far, merchants come to offer their wares. This has been going on for centuries.

But in Jokkmokk, things are a little different. Jokkmokk is located in northern Sweden. Just north of the Arctic Circle. In Jokkmokk, the traditional annual fair is always on the first weekend in February. It has been for 415 years.

In the heart of winter, Sámi gather from all over the region to trade, celebrate and meet. Transportation used to be on ice. The rivers were the roads that led to Jokkmokk. Winter the sophisticated period when the reindeer roamed free and the Sámi themselves could gather. Transportation today is by road. But the variety of costume that is still there. For 415 years.

Join the market in Jokkmokk during the Sami Culture Experience.

  • Visit the Jokkmokk annual market
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Husky trek
  • Culinary excursion
  • Reindeer farm visit
  • Sami museum visit
  • Elk and Wildlife safari
  • Full board in hostel

The Sámi Culture Experience in Jokkmokk is a week-long activity package including accommodation at the guesthouse right in the center of Jokkmokk’s winter market. Enjoy the music and atmosphere at the market and try local food from the stalls.
In small groups, experience dog sledding and search for the northern lights in a wintry landscape outside Jokkmokk. Experience Sami culture with a local family of reindeer herders, meet their reindeer and listen to stories around the fire.
More than 400 years ago, people in the north gathered around Jokkmokk to trade furs, silver and other supplies. In winter, the lakes were frozen and traders could easily travel longer distances. In the early 17th century, the Swedish king wanted to control the northern territories and saw this as an excellent opportunity to establish a permanent marketplace to draw taxes from the people.
Jokkmokk’s winter market is still an annual event and has developed into a festival with both the marketplace and various winter activities.
