IMMERSED IN THE CULTURE OF THE SÁMI

.

Ingredients:
Culture, Winter Market, Sámi, Huskies, Northern Lights, Enjoy & Experience

Get in real contact with the Sámi and experience the culture up close.

In the Netherlands, summers are traditionally the time for annual fairs.
Merchants come from far and wide to offer their wares.
This has been going on for centuries.

But in Jokkmokk, things are a little different.
Jokkmokk is located in the north of Sweden.
Just north of the Arctic Circle.
In Jokkmokk, the traditional winter market always takes place on the first weekend of February.
It has been for 415 years.

In the heart of winter, Sámi from across the region gather to trade, celebrate, and meet.
In the past, transport was over ice.
The rivers were the roads leading to Jokkmokk.
Winter was the perfect time when the reindeer roamed free and the Sámi could gather.
Nowadays, transport is by road.
But the variety of traditional costumes is still there.
For 415 years.

Join us at the Jokkmokk market during the Sami Culture Experience.

6-day cultural trip to the Sámi in Swedish Lapland.

  • Visit the Jokkmokk winter market
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Husky trek
  • Culinary excursion
  • Reindeer farm visit
  • Sami museum visit
  • Elk and Wildlife safari
  • Full board in hostel

The Sámi Culture Experience in Jokkmokk is a week-long activity package including accommodation in a guesthouse right in the center of the Jokkmokk winter market.
Enjoy the music and atmosphere at the market and try local dishes from the stalls.

In small groups, you’ll experience dog sledding and search for the northern lights in a wintry landscape outside Jokkmokk.
Experience Sami culture with a local family of reindeer herders, meet their reindeer, and listen to stories around the fire.

More than 400 years ago, people in the north already gathered around Jokkmokk to trade furs, silver, and other necessities.
In winter, the lakes were frozen, allowing traders to easily travel longer distances.
In the early 17th century, the Swedish king wanted to control the northern territories and saw this as a perfect opportunity to establish a permanent marketplace to collect taxes from the people.

The Jokkmokk winter market is still an annual event and has evolved into a festival featuring both the marketplace and various winter activities.

Included meals each day marked O = breakfast, L = lunch and D = dinner

DAY 1 ARRIVAL JOKKMOKK (D)

At 3 p.m. a cab will be waiting at Luleå airport. This takes us to Jokkmokk in just over 2 hours. (This is optional to book)

Jokkmokk is a small town just north of the Arctic Circle where the population doubles every year during the Jokkmokk winter market. You can check into the guesthouse from 3 p.m. onwards. If you arrive a bit earlier, you can leave your luggage at the reception.
We gather at 6:00 PM at Jokkmokk guesthouse, where you will be staying this week. You will dine with your host, who will brief you on the upcoming program.

DAY 2 SAMI EXPERIENCE AND NORTHERN LIGHT EVENING (O, L, D)

We start the day with a buffet breakfast at the guesthouse. Today you will visit our friend Anna Kuhmunen from a local family of reindeer herders. You will have the chance to meet her reindeer, taste traditional Sámi dishes and listen to stories of her life and culture. In the afternoon you will have time to explore the town on your own and visit the local museum about the mountains and the Sámi people. Or try the sauna in the guest house?

After dinner, we get dressed to look for the northern lights. A snowmobile takes you outside Jokkmokk where we have a warming fire and watch the sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.
