Warm feet during the expedition
Below you can read the transcript of the video recorded by Henk-Jan Geel about the expedition materials.
‘I want to tell you something about how I keep my feet warm during the arctic expedition and so what I wear on my feet.
Well I wear a more layered system.
I start with a very thin sock not cotton, but polypropylene sock or a plastic sock as the first layer then I take this one they call a vapor barrier liner it’s actually a big plastic bag they use in the food industry that you can put over your boot are when you walk into a factory, but I put it over this sock.
The advantage of this is that all the moisture I get while walking so the sweat from the feet stays in this and so does not go on to the next layer and so does not get into my shoes.
The beauty of this bag is that yes you can barely feel it when you have it in your shoe and the moisture that’s in it at night when I’m in the tent I put the bag inside out and the moisture it freezes and you can take that off the so there are actually in arctic expeditions two camps people who swear by it and people who hate this and only experience can decide which camp you belong to.
I did for quite a while without vapor barrier liners, but I’m really starting to lean towards vapor barrier liners now that you should always use that because you keep dry shoes and dry oversock and slightly damp feet that is but they don’t get incredibly damp so such a vapor barrier liner use that.
About the vapor barrier liner: do thick socks.
In this case it’s socks from Icebreaker the mountaineering socks: the thickest socks from Icebreaker out there and so this is the insulation value and with this whole set so thin sock, the vapor barrier liner and the oversock that goes into your shoe.
So also make sure that if you have shoes that they are roomy.
I’m normally a size 46, which is already big, but now I’m a size 47.
My expedition shoes are size 47 because then you can put this on there at night in camp I take this off I have a pair of wool socks and my don slippers so this is the combination I have in the tent so far about feet and how I keep my feet warm during arctic expeditions.’
