Preparing for the expedition
It’s almost here. In a few days, a team of five Dutchmen will leave for Greenland to cross the Greenland ice cap. But this expedition is not something they can do alone. There is a whole team behind them, supporting them and helping them prepare. In this blog update, I would like to pay a little more attention to these people, who often remain in the shadows and are not always named.
Help with nutrition
Before the team leaves, there has been a lot of help putting together meals. The company Xfood.com helped put together the evening meals and breakfasts. The ladies at Noten.nl also contributed by putting together a special Arctic Adventure Nut Mix. This nut mix will be eaten throughout the day as lunch. After all, nutrition is an important aspect during such an expedition.
Safety first
In addition to nutrition, safety is also very important during the expedition. One aspect of safety is crevasse rescue, or rescuing someone who has fallen into a glacial crevasse. Arnoud, known from the Kilimanjaro Experience, helped the team with this. He has experience with extreme conditions and knows how to perform glacier crevasse rescue exercises. His expertise is invaluable to the team.
Basecamp Manager Dirk van As
A key person on the team is Dirk van As, the Basecamp Manager of the company Greenland Guidance. He ensures that the team receives daily weather reports. This is crucial information because the team wants to know if a storm is coming, if it is going to be very cold or if rain is expected. Dirk has been to Greenland more than 50 times to support sporting and scientific expeditions. He is an experienced meteorologist and an indispensable member of the team.
Communication and social media
Kees plays an important role in the team’s communication. He ensures that social media channels continue to work and that questions from the public are forwarded to the team on the ice sheet. This way, the team can answer questions in the next update. Kees is an essential link in communication between the team and the outside world.
Professional physician team
The team also has a professional medical team in the Netherlands behind it. Outdoor Medicine, along with Maybrit, Marijn and Remco. They are ready to advise and assist the team if medical assistance is needed. While the team hopes they never have to deal with medical problems, it is reassuring to know that medical support is available 24/7.
Support from friends and family
Finally, the team cannot do without the support of friends and family. Being away from home for five weeks and having to hand over responsibilities to others is no small thing. Family members miss their father, mother, boyfriend or girlfriend. Without the support of friends and family, such an expedition would not be possible. As such, the team is extremely grateful for their support.
A team effort
The expedition to Greenland is much more than just a few men and women stalwartly putting down a great trek. It is a team effort, involving many people. From preparing meals to providing weather reports and medical support, every member of the team contributes to the success of the expedition.
On the way to Greenland
With just a few days to go, the team is busy making final preparations. Packing the last of their belongings is on the agenda before they leave the Netherlands and head for Greenland. The adventure is about to begin and the team is ready. Thanks for reading and until the next update!
