TWO UNKNOWN PASSES TO KEBNEKAISE

Sápmi High Passage is a continuous winter expedition on backcountry skis between Kebnats and Kebnekaise Mountain Station, covering approximately one hundred kilometers through the Swedish part of Sápmi. We do not follow any known long-distance routes. Instead, we explore the terrain between the well-known Kungsleden huts, crossing two high mountain passes that are rarely visited in winter.

Sápmi is the traditional homeland of the Sámi people. Reindeer husbandry, language, landscape, and seasons are all closely intertwined here. We move through this area with care, minimizing our impact and leaving campsites clean.

You travel on backcountry skis, pulling everything you need in a pulka behind you. Tent, sleeping bag, food for the entire week. At departure, that pulka weighs about forty kilos. After a few days, you’ll realize you need less than you thought. That is an insight you’ll take home with you.

Is this trip right for me?

Sápmi High Passage takes you nine days through Swedish Lapland, six of them in a tent. Good fitness is the main requirement; you don't need to bring specific trekking or expedition experience.

MaybeCan this be my first expedition?
It can, depending on your background. Relevant outdoor or trekking experience is desired for this trip.

This trip suits you if:

you have a good basic level of fitness

You can hike 10 km carrying a 10 kg backpack, 10 days in a row. Or you can run 10 km non-stop.

you can stay physically active for multiple days in a row

This trip lasts 9 days, 6 nights of which in a tent. We are on the move 6 hours a day.

you're up for six nights in a tent in Lapland
you're looking for a trip where not everything is fixed in advance

What you don't need

trekking experience is not necessary
prior expedition experience is not required

What experience do you need?

Trekking2/5Nice to have

Think navigation, first aid, self-reliance, mental resilience and handling stress.

Camping2/5Nice to have

Think pitching a tent, keeping a camp routine, packing your backpack and sleeping well on the move.

Winter camping2/5Nice to have

Think staying warm, recognising hypothermia, handling cold, setting up camp in snow and sleeping warm.

Cross-country skiing3/5Experience helpful

About experience with cross-country ski touring, pulling a sled.

Mountain/terrain3/5Experience helpful

About rocky terrain, bushwhacking and uneven ground.

Expedition experience3/5Experience helpful

About keeping the same daily rhythm for a long time, adjusting plans and handling uncertainty.

Trip difficulty

Physical3/5substantial

What your body can take: how many hours a day you are on the move, how much weight you carry and how many days in a row. This is the demand you can do the most about at home.

On the Sapmi High Passage: 10 to 15 kilometers a day hauling your sled, seven days straight.

Expedition3/5substantial

How far you are from the inhabited world and how long you depend on yourself and the group. Nights in the tent, distance to help, and whether there is resupply along the way.

On the Sapmi High Passage: Six nights in a tent, far from any settlement.

Technical3/5substantial

Which skills the terrain and the way you travel ask of you. Navigating, ski technique, judging snow, paddling. Not how hard it is, but how much you need to be able to do.

On the Sapmi High Passage: Rolling terrain, two passes and off-trail, on skis.

Scale 1 to 5.
1 is low, 5 is very high.

Moving in a rhythm determined by the pass

We cover approximately 15 kilometers per day, at a pace suited to the terrain and weather. After about a third of the route, we reach the first high crossing at approximately 885 meters. Above the tree line, the shelter disappears and the views open up.
From the pass, we look out over the next valley and see how our route continues further north.

After a long stretch through an open winter valley, the second and highest pass follows at about 1,000 meters. Wide, barren, and fully exposed to the elements. In clear visibility, it is one of the most beautiful moments of the trip; in wind and snow, it becomes a serious navigation challenge.

Next week you’ll be back at your desk. Here, on day seven, you are standing on an exposed plateau with six people around you and no one else within thirty kilometers.

  • 100 km on backcountry skis
  • 9-day winter expedition
  • Two exposed mountain passes
  • Six nights in the expedition tent
  • Own pulk weighing forty kilos
  • Route beyond the well-known Kungsleden huts
  • Arrival at the Kebnekaise massif
  • Guided by an IPGA Polar Guide
  • Maximum 7 participants

After several solo trips, I joined the Kungsleden Winter Trail 2024 with Arctic Adventure. No regrets!
It was an amazing trip!
The teams at Arctic Adventure are small, so you get to know each other quickly and really rely on one another in the cold white world, which is dazzlingly beautiful but can also be quite stormy at times.

Our guide Henk-Jan Geel is an experienced Polar Guide, from whom I learned an incredible amount in a short time, making me feel confident enough now to explore the High North alone next year.
He also knows how to support everyone in the right way, sometimes with an arm around you, sometimes by giving you space.

The questions he asks also create mutual connection and good group dynamics within the group.

A tough journey, and that’s the point

Sápmi High Passage is a Red Label expedition. Challenging in design, independent in execution. In nine days, you cover approximately one hundred kilometers on backcountry skis, pulling a pulka. You are on the move for seven of those days. You spend six nights in an expedition tent, with the first and last nights spent indoors.

We don’t follow a fixed route between huts, but instead seek out the exposed terrain between two high mountain passes. Conditions can be tough, especially when the wind picks up on the passes. Those are exactly the moments you’ll remember.

Can I handle this?

This is the question that holds most people back, so here is a concrete answer. You don’t need to run a marathon. Assume that you can walk ten kilometers at a normal pace with ten kilos on your back, for ten days in a row. If you can run ten kilometers without stopping, you’re good. The strain is mainly in your knees and lower back.

Experience with winter camping is not required. For many participants, this is their first time sleeping in the snow. If you have doubts about your fitness level, just give the guide a call. That five-minute conversation will give you an honest answer.

What a day looks like

The alarm goes off around seven, but you start by having breakfast quietly in your sleeping bag. On the way, we alternate strides with short breaks. In the late afternoon, the guide finds a suitable campsite. Melting snow, cooking, eating, and then looking up at the sky.

Equipment

We provide all the winter equipment for you to borrow. Backcountry skis, backcountry ski boots, skins, poles, a pulka with a harness, the expedition tent, a sleeping bag comfortable down to minus 25, and a winter sleeping mat. We also take care of the group gear: stoves, fuel, navigation, communication, and the first aid kit. All food is included.

You arrange your personal clothing, your flight to Luleå or Kiruna, and your insurance. You can rent a down jacket from us for 50 euros. As a participant, you receive a 10 percent discount at Bever.

The group

We go with a maximum of seven participants and one guide. That is no coincidence, but a conscious choice: in a group of this size, everyone knows each other within two days and the guide can give attention where needed. The trip goes ahead from five registrations.

This could be your first winter expedition. For some, it is the stepping stone to Sarek or Greenland.

Program schedule ‘Sápmi High Passage’ expedition in Sweden

Two unknown passes to Kebnekaise

Day 1

You travel to Jokkmokk on your own, for example with a flight to Luleå followed by a bus. We expect you around 5:00 PM at Hotel Jokkmokk, so the whole group is present for dinner. We will go through the program and the final practical details and check personal equipment. You will sleep indoors this first night.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, we depart by shuttle to Kebnats, on the north side of Lake Langas. We unload the pulks, check the hauling harnesses, and set the first course. At the end of the day, we set up the first winter camp. From now on, you carry everything yourself and sleep in the tent every night.

Day 3

We follow the terrain to the north, away from the well-known travel routes. The pulk is still heavy, so we look for a pace that can be maintained all day. Along the way, we pay attention to ski technique, clothing management, and efficient breaks in the cold.

Day 4

Today the first high crossing is on the agenda, at approximately 885 meters. Above the tree line, we are fully exposed to wind and weather. After the pass, we descend and look for a suitable spot for the next camp.

Day 5

A longer stretch through open mountain terrain. The landscape is vast and distances are difficult to estimate. The day is all about rhythm: skiing, short breaks, eating, drinking, and choosing a campsite on time.

Day 6

The terrain rises again. We approach the highest crossing of the expedition and, depending on the weather, look for a sheltered position before the pass or already complete part of the climb.

Day 7

The second pass reaches about 1,000 meters and forms the highest point of the route. No trees grow here and there is little natural shelter. After the pass, we descend towards Kebnekaise and set up our final expedition camp.

Day 8

We break down the winter camp for the last time and reach Kebnekaise Mountain Station in the course of the afternoon. There, Nikkaluokta Sarri AB picks us up with snowmobiles and takes us to Nikkaluokta. After six nights in the tent, we shower, put on dry clothes, and eat together in the restaurant. We sleep indoors tonight.

Day 9

After an early breakfast, we are taken to Kiruna. You can get off at the airport or the train station. Please coordinate your exact departure time in advance with Arctic Adventure.

Preparation

We meet once before the trip during a preparation webinar and a fitting session. You’ll receive an explanation of the materials, and we’ll study the map together.

During the Trip

Trips at Arctic Adventure are ‘Expedition Experiences’. You experience what an expedition could be like. Sometimes tough, sometimes easy. But always together.
We sleep in tents. You do this with someone else (or your partner) from the group. On summer trips, you can choose to bring your own tent. In that case, you can also sleep alone. On winter trips, for safety reasons, at least two people always sleep in a tent.
Moving, cooking, and navigating are done together. The beauty of small groups is that a real and strong group feeling always develops. Sometimes friendships and reunions still happen years later.

WhatsApp

We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.

Fitness

This ‘Expedition Challenge’ is a Red Label expedition and is challenging in design. Good fitness is necessary. Depending on the weather, it could be a demanding journey.

You don’t need to run a marathon. But assume you should be able to walk 10 kilometers at a normal pace with a 10 kg backpack, for 10 consecutive days.
Running 10 kilometers non-stop is also fine. Any questions? Contact the guide.
During the trip, physical strain is primarily on the knees and lower back.

Sports Medical Examination

Are you older than 55 and want to participate in this trip? Then we advise you to have a sports medical examination performed. Read more about the possibilities here.

Safety

During the trip, we are in uninhabited territory. The guide carries a Garmin inReach and a satellite phone, as well as both digital (GPS) and analog (compass) navigation. A Basecamp Manager in the Netherlands follows the trip.
The guide is trained in Wilderness Advanced First Aid and is a WGA I (Wilderness Guide Association) guide.

Packing List

After your registration (or upon request) you’ll receive a detailed packing list.

Backcountry skis

Would you like to read more about traveling on backcountry skis? Because that is what we will be doing during this expedition. Read about it on the toerlanglauftochten.nl website.
