Camp Alta
At the cozy Camp Alta, we all sleep together in a large cabin where each pair has their own room. We share the kitchen, living room and bathrooms. This is our base of operations for the first part of the trip. The camp is located next to a lake and there are several facilities such as sauna, ice wak and real Swedish fire hut. Plus, there is plenty of room for making lots of snowmen!
Wilderness cabin
This is a primitive cabin. No running water and no electricity. So we light the cabin with candles and warm it with a fire. Lovely classic. Outside is the toilet in a toilet building. A true “Ute tie. The sauna is also on the property. We can take advantage of this. There may also be other people in this area.
Camp Ripan
Luxury 4-person cabin with shower and toilet. Divided into two rooms for two people. Includes a small pantry with kettle. The restaurant is 50 meters away and is the best restaurant in Kiruna. At Camp Ripan, you sleep in style.
The travel conditions of Arctic Adventure apply to this trip.
As a travel organization, Arctic Adventure is a member of the VVKR (Association of Small Travel Agencies). We are insured for risk with the AON.
The plane from the Netherlands lands in Kiruna at the end of the afternoon. You will already have a day on it with a transfer in Copenhagen or Stockholm. Fortunately, a van is waiting at Kiruna airport to take us all, including luggage, to our accommodation in one go. This is the lodge Camp Alta. A perfect base for the beginning of the week and an ideal place to see the Northern Lights.
We eat dinner in our own large cabin and enjoy by the fireplace. In the evening, there is quiet time to get acquainted.
We all sleep in a large lodge with 2-bed rooms per family.
The first day is immediately dominated by many features of Lapland. In the morning we will go out and visit a real Ice Hotel. Everything in this hotel is made of ice, how cool! Here you can get nice inspiration for the afternoon program… Next to the hotel is the Sami museum where we will also visit and learn more about the original inhabitants of Lapland.
By noon, we will drive back to the camp and make an igloo. If it works out even an igloo that we can eat in at night. Even though our lodge is a dozen meters away. So eating inside is always possible. We just sleep in the lodge. Although a sleeping bag can of course be arranged for the truly adventurous polar bear…
After breakfast, we set out early. At 08:30 we start the moose safari. Early, though. But the moose are the best to find then. We have lunch during the safari with a real outdoor lunch. The safari lasts a whopping 4.5 hours. So ample opportunity to spot the king of the forest.
In the afternoon, we go out on our own. Near the lodge, you can explore the area with snowshoes. Either follow the path through the woods, or keep it quiet and go horizontally across the river. The pace is up to you. We are in no hurry. We are on vacation.
Dinner is again at the cabin and will be cooked by the tour guide. In the evening, we can go out again with our new skill, snowshoeing, to look for the Northern Lights or you can warm up in the sauna.
After a nice breakfast, we’ll start with the action right away; heading out on snowmobiles. We depart at 9:30 AM, hit the gas, and head into the area on snowmobiles under the guidance of a guide. Children join their parents at the back. Helmet on and well packed on the way. We have lunch along the way and then take another trip. Around 3 p.m. we will be back and there will be time to relax or go in the sauna.
We take it easy in the morning and pack our bags. Towards noon we’ll head to the husky kennel and get to harness the huskies to our pulk ourselves. The children will also get their own pulk. With amiable dogs that listen well and are not super strong. You get 2, 3 or 4 dogs. Depending on what you like and what the dog can pull off. If it’s too exciting (which is possible), you can ride on the pulk with mom or dad. But that rarely happens :-)
After a good but simple instruction, we follow the guide and the column of pulks sets off. Silently we glide through the Swedish forests. We eat lunch on the road. Warmed on a wood fire. In the evening we arrive at a wilderness cabin. We help feed and groom the dogs. Really nice to be able to feed your own team. At the cabin we have a good meal. And what could be better than a real Swedish sauna at the end of such a day. Now add the Northern Lights and you’ll never want to leave.
After breakfast, the dogs are already eager for another run. Really nice to see that these animals love this. We sled through an awakening landscape. Toward the end of the morning we arrived back at the kennel. One last photo and then we headed to our final stop: Camp Ripan. In the afternoon we can recover from all the adventures and if you want you can enjoy the spa at the hotel. This starred hotel and restaurant has already won several awards. A perfect spot to end this unforgettable week. We sleep in 4-person lodges. Dinner is in the restaurant where our table is reserved from 19:00.
After breakfast, we have some time to explore Kiruna. From Camp Ripan get on the bus at 2 p.m. and ride right into the mine. With bus and all! We will visit the largest iron mine in Europe. The mine is in full operation. 24 hours a day. With helmets on, the guide shows us the machines used there. Tires so big, you can stand in them. Impressive for young and old alike.
After breakfast, our transfer to the airport awaits. In the early afternoon, it’s take-off. The plane leaves to finally land back at Schiphol Airport around 7 p.m. with a stopover in Stockholm/Copenhagen.
Well, now comes the biggest question. How am I going to explain this week at school tomorrow? That’s almost impossible to do.
Beforehand, we keep in touch via email, phone or WhatsApp. We met at Schiphol Airport when we booked the same flight. This may vary because everyone gets to decide how they go to Sweden. The Dutch-speaking guide will be waiting for you in Kiruna anyway
We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.
No special fitness is required for this trip. However, it is important that you are healthy enough to ride a snowmobile or go out with the huskies. Children ride on the back with their parents during the snowmobile tour. If you have any questions about your condition, please contact us.
A Dutch tour guide will be present throughout the trip. The trip has no extremely dangerous parts. Although an accident can always happen. Especially with the snowmobile or the huskies. We are in populated areas so help is quickly on the scene or available.
