Expedition over Greenland: Day 5

The fifth day of our expedition across Greenland has arrived and we got up early to make a fresh start. In fact, yesterday’s day ended with wet snow and mushy conditions, soaking our shoes and skis. That was certainly not a highlight to end the day with. Therefore, we decided to get up early and leave at 4 a.m. The result was a beautiful sunrise here in Greenland.

A breathtaking sunrise

A light glow first appeared in the east, followed by the first signs of the sun rising above the horizon. We were in the midst of numerous crevasses, which presented a challenge. Fortunately, we no longer had to cross small rivers, as we had to do yesterday, but the crevasses remained. Fortunately, they gradually became fewer and fewer and the terrain became flatter.

Finally on the skis

After five days, we were finally able to strap on our skis at the end of the second shift. It was a wonderful feeling to glide through the snow, but we still had to pull our heavy sleds behind us. It was quite an effort. I myself suffered blisters and sore muscles, and I believe the other participants were not spared either. We skied all day, always in one-hour shifts followed by a break.

Disappearing mountains and increasing winds

Slowly the mountains disappeared behind us, leaving only the vast snowfields. However, the wind began to pick up and you may be able to hear the sound of the tent clattering in the background. We set up our three tents in a storm. The first tent was set up carefully and safely by five people, and we built a wall of sleds on the windward side of the tents to provide shelter. Then we set up the next two tents the same way. We are happy to be in our “castle” Hillenberg tent now. Here we had dinner, slept in a bit and planned to go to bed early. We are all exhausted after this intense day. A new day awaits us tomorrow, as we are going to…

A new day full of challenges

Tomorrow a new day full of challenges awaits us. We are determined to continue our expedition across Greenland, despite fatigue and physical discomfort. We will continue to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and adapt to the changing weather conditions. Greenland continues to surprise us and we are determined to achieve our goals.
