Waiting, discovery and delay in Tassilaq
A day’s wait in Tasiilaq
It’s a day of waiting in Tasiilaq for the team. The frustration is palpable, as they would rather be active on the ice cap than sitting here twiddling their thumbs. Still, they make good use of their time by going over important issues. Thus, they went through Crevasse Rescue again and checked all communication equipment. It is essential that everyone on the team knows how the various communication tools work, such as the Personal Locator Beacon, satellite phone and inReach.
A visit to the museum
Finally, they were able to make their long-awaited visit to the museum in Tassilaq. The museum is located in an old church building called the Old Church of Tassilaq. Interestingly, the museum shows how the influence of the Danes changed the village. The Inuit used to live in earthen houses, but with the advent of the
Danes has changed a lot. Cars drive around Tassilaq and there is even asphalt on many roads. However, the village is not connected to other villages, so cars travel only within Tassilaq. The team wonders if you need a driver’s license here at all, since there is no driving school to get your license.
Tassilaq, one of the last villages in Greenland
Tasiilaq is one of the last villages in Greenland to be discovered and unlocked, sometime in the 1850s-1860s. Before then, it was difficult to get here because of the sea ice that occupied the fjord. So the village is still in contact with the outside world, which makes it interesting. A total of about 1,100 people live in Tassilaq, which is a fairly large community. Only 56,000 people live in all of Greenland, equivalent to the population of a small to medium-sized village in the Netherlands.
An abandoned wasteland
The contrast between the bustle in Tassilaq and the desolate wasteland beyond is remarkable. The team describes Greenland as a vast desolate wilderness with only a few villages. It is a place where nature prevails and tranquility prevails.
Boat delay
Finally, there is an important update regarding the boat. Instead of Sunday, the boat will arrive on Monday, which means another day’s delay. This news is not received with enthusiasm. The team can’t wait to finally get on with their adventure. All in all, it is a day of waiting and discovery in Tassilaq. The team makes the most of their time by going over important issues and visiting the museum. Despite the boat’s delay, motivation remains high. They are determined to continue their adventure and face the challenges of the ice sheet.
