Expedition: Heroes of Telemark
Location: Hardangervidda, Norway
I participated in the “heroes of telemark” trek. Henk-Jan is an experienced expedition leader who tries to give participants as much independence as possible and only intervenes when necessary due to, for example, weather conditions.
During the trek, you’ll move through an area where temperatures can easily drop to -20 and where you’re more likely to run into reindeer or moose than other people. With us it snowed a lot in particular which, combined with the white environment, meant that you sometimes had low visibility and could not see depth. When a little later the snowing stopped you found you could see for miles.
You follow the route also used by Norwegian commandos during World War II to carry out a sabotage operation on the Vemork heavy water plant.
On the last day, you visit those as well. Tent, food and fuel will be carried by you and the rest of the group using skis and sled. Water is obtained by melting snow.
