Discover the True Wilderness of Scotland:
16-Day Cape Wrath Trail Trekking

Imagine: a 16-day journey through one of Europe’s most remote and breathtaking wildernesses. The Cape Wrath Trail, considered the toughest long-distance hike in the United Kingdom, takes you through rugged mountain ranges, silent valleys, and wild rivers.

It’s a challenging trek of over 200 kilometers through northwest Scotland, where you rely entirely on yourself and your equipment. Here, far from the inhabited world, it’s just you and nature.

Arctic Adventure offers the chance to experience this iconic route in two weeks. Expect endless views, wildlife roaming freely, and an unparalleled sense of adventure as you walk towards Cape Wrath and its famous lighthouse. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

The history of the Cape Wrath Trail

The Cape Wrath Trail is not just a hiking path; it’s a route with deep-rooted history. This trek became popular among adventurers in the 1990s, but traces of this route date back much further. Historically, the area was traversed by Scottish cattle farmers and hunters. The name “Cape Wrath” itself comes from the Old Norse word “hvarf,” meaning ‘turn’ or ‘turning point’ – a reference to where Vikings would turn their ships at the northwestern tip of Scotland.

The trail is not an officially marked path, meaning you need to navigate using maps and compass along the way. This makes the route both challenging and attractive to seasoned adventurers. The sense of remoteness you experience here makes the Cape Wrath Trail one of the most authentic wilderness experiences in Europe.

Highlights of the Cape Wrath Trail

While the full Cape Wrath Trail is over 300 kilometers long, this trek focuses on the last 200 kilometers – perhaps the most impressive part of the route. This section offers unparalleled beauty and isolation, with some of the most extraordinary natural highlights of northwest Scotland. Here are some of the highlights you’ll encounter on this final stretch:

Loch Glencoul and the Eas a’ Chual Aluinn waterfall

Loch Glencoul is a remote loch surrounded by steep mountains, and nearby is the impressive Eas a’ Chual Aluinn, the highest waterfall in the United Kingdom. With a drop of over 200 meters, this waterfall is three times higher than Niagara Falls! The sight of the water plunging over the cliffs, surrounded by the wild and rugged landscape, is truly spectacular and one of the most memorable moments of the trek.

Loch Stack and Arkle

This part of the trail offers beautiful views of Loch Stack, with the iconic Arkle mountain rising on the horizon. Arkle is a beautiful sandstone mountain that offers an impressive sight due to its unique layered structure, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun bathes the landscape in gold and pink hues. The area around Loch Stack is also ideal for spotting wildlife, such as eagles, deer, and sometimes even wildcats.

The ruins of Ardvreck Castle

Along the shore of Loch Assynt, you’ll encounter the mysterious ruins of Ardvreck Castle, a 16th-century castle that was once home to the powerful Clan MacLeod. This castle carries a rich history and forms a photogenic silhouette against the dramatic backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. As you explore the ruins, you can almost feel the stories of bloody clan conflicts and the centuries-old history of the area.

Sutherland’s remote wilderness

The Sutherland region, through which a large part of the last 200 kilometers runs, is one of the most remote and pristine areas of Scotland. The vast heathlands, remote valleys, and silent lochs give you the feeling of being completely disconnected from the outside world. Here you’ll find no roads or villages, only endless nature and silence. This part of the trail offers a unique opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness and experience the raw beauty of the land.

Sandwood Bay

A remote beach that is only accessible on foot. The sand here is soft and white, while the Atlantic waves crash against the rocky cliffs. This is an ideal place to rest and take in the beauty of Scotland.

Cape Wrath lighthouse and cliffs

The ultimate destination of the Cape Wrath Trail is the Cape Wrath lighthouse, located on the highest cliffs of the British mainland. With a height of over 280 meters, these cliffs offer an unparalleled view over the Atlantic Ocean. The remote location and rugged surroundings of Cape Wrath give you the feeling of standing at the end of the world. The lighthouse itself, built in 1828, is an iconic landmark and symbolizes the endpoint of this epic trek.

Natural beauty and wildlife

During your trek on the Cape Wrath Trail, you’ll have the chance to discover an unprecedented range of wildlife and natural formations. The northwest of Scotland is home to some of the most unique animal species in the United Kingdom.

Wildlife

From the impressive sea eagle soaring above you to the playful otters darting along the rivers – the Cape Wrath Trail offers a great opportunity to see Scotland’s fauna in their natural environment. Additionally, you might encounter red deer, especially in the more remote valleys and forests. In the waters around Cape Wrath itself, you have the chance to spot seals and maybe even dolphins.

Geological formations

The trail takes you through some of the oldest rocks on Earth, with spectacular geological formations such as the peaks of Suilven and Quinag, both formed by millions of years of erosion. The contrast between the sharp mountains and the rolling valleys makes the landscape here unique and unforgettable.

What makes this draw unique?

The Cape Wrath Trail is a true test of your perseverance and an adventure that’s not for everyone. This is not an easy trek – the terrain is rugged, the weather conditions are often unpredictable, and you need to be well prepared. But it’s precisely these challenges that make the journey so special.

The sense of accomplishment you get when you reach the Cape Wrath lighthouse after two weeks of hiking is unparalleled. The remote location of the area means you might not encounter anyone for days, allowing you to experience a deep connection with nature that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a chance to escape the modern world for a while and fully immerse yourself in the overwhelming beauty of the Scottish landscape.

Take on the challenge with Arctic Adventure

Arctic Adventure offers a well-prepared and guided 14-day trek on the Cape Wrath Trail. Our experienced guides ensure that you can safely and well-equipped face the challenges of the trail. From detailed navigation to sharing the rich history and knowledge of the region, we make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible while still experiencing the full wilderness experience.

Are you ready to take on the ultimate adventure?
Join Arctic Adventure and discover the true wilderness of Scotland on the Cape Wrath Trail.

Note: Cape Wrath is a military training ground

In the region of Cape Wrath, the British Army occasionally conducts exercises with aircraft and live ammunition. Those dates are only announced shortly beforehand. Obviously, it is impossible for us to walk all the way to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath when the bullets are flying around our ears. In that case, we will turn around shortly before Cape Wrath and that is the northernmost we can reach then.

Program format ‘Cape Wrath’ in Scotland

A challenging and tough backpacking trek along one of Europe’s most notorious trails

Day 1: Arrival in Inverness

Welcome to Inverness, the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted by our guide in the hotel lobby. The city, located on the banks of the River Ness, is surrounded by rolling hills and offers a first glimpse of the rugged nature you’ll discover in the coming days. A quiet evening to recover from your journey and prepare for the adventure that lies ahead.

Day 2: Castles and Whisky tour

Today we explore the rich history and culture of the Highlands. We visit an ancient castle, surrounded by forests and misty hills, where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. In the afternoon, we delve into the world of Scottish whisky during a tour of a local distillery. Here you’ll taste the rich, smoky flavors of the finest single malt whiskies, straight from the source.

Day 3: Kinlochewe to Shenavall (first part – 10 km)

The journey truly begins! We depart from Kinlochewe, surrounded by the impressive Torridon mountains. The sharp, heather-covered mountains tower high above us as we walk through the vast valleys. The nature here is raw and pristine; you immediately feel the grandeur of the landscape. We camp halfway, deep in the wilderness.

Day 4: Kinlochewe to Shenavall (second section – 18 km)

Today we continue our journey to Shenavall Bothy, an iconic shelter along the Cape Wrath Trail. The day is tough, but the vast views over Loch na Sealga and the impressive An Teallach mountain range are more than worth it. This is the Scotland of legends, rugged and lonely. We spend the night in tents, with the starry sky as our roof.

Day 5: Shenavall to Inverlael (18 km)

We continue our trek to Inverlael. The landscape is dominated by valleys and rivers, with occasional waterfalls cascading down the rock faces. The day offers a variety of forests and open plains, with occasional views of the rugged peaks in the distance. The path is challenging, but each step brings you closer to the essence of the Scottish wilderness.

Day 6: Inverlael to Oykel Bridge (first part – 17 km)

Today we hike through the silent forests and along the calm river to Oykel Bridge. The surroundings are soothing, with the sound of flowing rivers and bird songs around us. The path is easier, giving us a chance to relax and absorb the simplicity of nature.

Day 7: Inverlael to Oykel Bridge (second section – 17 km)

We reach Oykel Bridge, a remote but idyllic spot along the river. Here our food drop awaits, providing us with fresh food for the rest of the journey. The feeling of isolation begins to increase; we are deep in the Scottish Highlands, far away from the inhabited world. We spend the night in tents along the river.

Day 8: Oykel Bridge to Inchnadamph (22 km – Food Pick-Up)

Today we continue to Inchnadamph, known for its proximity to the impressive limestone caves and the mystic atmosphere of Loch Assynt. The route is long and challenging, but the views over the water and the surrounding mountains are unsurpassed. We spend the night in the wilderness, close to the caves, with only the wind and the animals of the Highlands for company.

Day 9: Inchnadamph to Kylestrome (22 km)

Today’s journey takes us through the valleys of northern Sutherland. Here you really feel how remote and pristine the nature is. Rivers meander through the landscape, and in the distance, you occasionally see a lonely mountain peak. We spend the night in tents in Kylestrome, with the rugged coast not far away.

Day 10: Kylestrome to Rhiconich (first part – 11 km)

We split the route to Rhiconich and stop halfway to camp. The landscape is varied, with lakes hidden between the hills and rocky sections that make the terrain more challenging. The peace and space are overwhelming, and the silence of the Highlands is all-encompassing.

Day 11: Kylestrome to Rhiconich (second part – 11 km)

We reach the remote village of Rhiconich, a small settlement that feels like the end of the inhabited world. Here you can almost hear the stories of ancient Scottish clan traditions whispering in the wind. We set up camp and prepare for the final, spectacular stages.

Day 12: Rhiconich to Sandwood Bay (19 km)

The trek to Sandwood Bay is long, but the reward is great: one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland, where the white sand contrasts with the dark cliffs and the wild ocean. The Am Buachaille sea stack towers above the water like a lone guardian of the coast. We camp on the beach, surrounded by nothing but nature.

Day 13: Sandwood Bay to Cape Wrath (12 km)

Today we reach the northernmost point of the British mainland: Cape Wrath. The high cliffs and the mighty lighthouse mark the end of our journey north. Here, with the wind in your face and the ocean stretching out before you, you feel how small you are compared to the immense power of nature. We spend the night on the cliffs.

Day 14: Cape Wrath to Blairmore (20 km)

The return journey begins. We trek along the coast and through the hills, back to Blairmore. The landscape is as beautiful as on the outward journey, but now with a sense of completed journey in our hearts. We spend the night in tents and enjoy the last moments in the unspoiled nature.

Day 15: Return to Inverness

A minibus takes us back to Inverness. Here, a warm shower, a good dinner, and a comfortable bed await us in a hotel. This is the moment to reminisce together about the past days and the overwhelming nature of the Cape Wrath Trail.

Day 16: Return home

After breakfast, this incredible adventure ends. You travel back home on your own, with a heart full of memories of the wildest and most beautiful corners of Scotland.
