Arctic Escape
Escape from the daily grind

_
Ingredients:
Rest, Nature, Northern Lights, Huskies & Team Spirit

Get away from it all.
That’s what this expedition is all about.
Away from the daily grind and craziness, hustle and bustle.
In nature, you come to complete rest.
And that cold, that’s the extra dimension you need.

In the vast white world we go out.
First with huskies through the Swedish forests.
Then with skis into nature.
We sleep in winter nature.
In a cabin and in the tent.
This is adventure of the highest order.

In nature you are never alone.
Tracks of animals, moose, trees and lakes.
They are all there, sometimes suddenly often in silence.
But your team is there too. Fellow adventurers who want something different.
Who don’t shy away from an adventure off the beaten path.

As a participant in the Arctic Grand Slam 2019, I experienced how great it is to go on an adventure with the professional and expert guidance of Arctic Adventure.

Learned a lot, was able to enrich and amaze myself (in a positive sense) and, in addition to a healthy dose of physical exertion, intensely enjoy all the beauty the Arctic has to offer! Arctic Adventure takes care of everything, arranges, guides, and brings participants together to indescribably beautiful, impressive areas where vacation, adventure, and personal and team development go hand in hand in a friendly atmosphere.

On to a new (Arctic) adventure!

What an experience to go on expedition with Henk-Jan to Lapland. This was a trip of a lifetime! Sleeping in a tent with minus 22 degrees. Beautiful area!

And then those sled dogs! They were really mine at that moment. Feeding and grooming.

The wilderness cabin… Fantastic. And a surprise lunch in the teepee. So many wonderful memories!!!

Welcome to the Arctic Escape

With the Arctic Escape, there’s no time to wait – we start enjoying ourselves right away!
Upon arrival at the Kiruna airport in Swedish Lapland, the kennel owner is already waiting for us.
He takes us to the Mushers Lodge, where we spend the first night.
This is the moment to settle in and get used to the new environment.

The next morning, we set off early.
In expedition style, we ski into the untouched Swedish wilderness.
We glide through dense forests, over frozen lakes and rivers, and feel ourselves being drawn deeper and deeper into nature.
Here, far away from the daily hustle and bustle, we escape everything.
For three nights, we sleep wherever we want, in expedition tents in the middle of the endless, vast wilderness.

On the fourth day, we arrive in the Sami village of Jukkasjärvi, where we visit the Sami museum.
Here, we delve into the rich culture and ancient traditions of the Sami, the original inhabitants of Swedish Lapland.
After the museum visit, the kennel owner takes us to the next escape: a spectacular two-day dog sledding.

With your own pulk and four dogs, you brave the Swedish wilderness.
We travel in a caravan over lakes, rivers, and through vast forests until we arrive at a remote wilderness hut.
Here, far away from the inhabited world, we chop wood for the sauna, and all our thoughts disappear into the here and now.

On the second day, we continue our journey with the huskies and return to the kennel.
We say goodbye to our faithful four-legged friends and are taken to Camp Ripan, a beautiful cabin complex in Kiruna.
Here, we enjoy a final evening with a delicious dinner in the best restaurant in Northern Sweden.

The Arctic Escape is a true escape into nature,
an escape to where we are actually supposed to be.

Program outline ‘Arctic Escape’ expedition in Sweden.

Escape the daily grind.

Day 1

We meet in Kiruna, Sweden. Or at the airport in the Netherlands when we fly together. You arrange the flight yourself. In Kiruna, we are picked up at the airport or train station by the kennel owner. The first night we sleep at the kennel. This way we can quietly “land” and get used to the new environment.

Overnight: Lodge at the kennel

Day 2

After breakfast, we go for it. We pack the pulk and say goodbye to the huskies for a while. The forests and lakes of Sweden await us.

We set off with a pulk behind us. Everything we need we take with us. Food, tents, sleeping bag. Less than you think. Slowly we glide through the landscape on our way to… well, we don’t have to do anything. Delicious.
We set up the tent at the end of the day, make food and perhaps a campfire. Before crawling into our sleeping bag, we look up for a moment. Maybe we will see the Northern Lights (again).

Overnight: Expedition tent

Day 3 & 4

Far from civilization, we continue on into nature, crossing lakes and landscape. A wonderful experience. Cold, enjoyment, loneliness and if you’re lucky not even cell phone coverage…
Deeper and deeper we go into the Swedish forests.
Through forests and over hill. In expedition style. Moving alternates with short breaks. In this way, we cover about 10 kilometers a day. During the day, we will scour the tree line in search of moose and reindeer. They are there. But do they show themselves?

In the evening we set up the tent. You can do that almost anywhere. Delightful in nature. Just where we are at the time. And then hunt. Hunting for the Northern Lights. The nights in the tent are special. Secretly, you know you’re going to miss this.

Overnight: Expedition tent

Day 5

During the morning we arrive at the Sami museum in Jukkasjärvi. Here we visit. When we step out of the museum, the kennel owner is waiting to take us to the kennel and the huskies. We receive extensive explanations about the huskies, the pulk, and clothing. We change into warm clothing and get on the sled. Slowly but surely, the caravan moves away deep into the Swedish forests. We enjoy lunch in nature. Sitting around a fireplace, both we and the dogs can recover for a while.
After lunch, we head further and deeper into the Swedish forests. After a few hours we arrive at the wilderness cabin. We feed the huskies and go to the table ourselves. In the evening we can use the sauna. The cabins are primitive, but that’s all you need here. We have each other and the stories come naturally to the table. We fire up the fireplace and if we are lucky we will see the Northern Lights.

Accommodation: Wilderness hut

Day 6

Early on we leave with the huskies. We have our own sled and harness our own dogs. We’ll wander over lakes, through forests and maybe even see a moose. The kings of the forest are numerous here, but know how to hide well. This is their home.
Just before noon we arrive back at the kennel. After saying goodbye to the dogs, we go to the table for lunch.
We say goodbye to the faithful four-legged friends. After lunch, we are taken back to Kiruna. Here we check into our hotel. The end of the tour is in sight. In the evening, we eat at one of the best restaurants in northern Sweden.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kiruna

Day 7

Today we get up early. Transportation back home. The taxi awaits us at the hotel and takes us to the airport or train station of Kiruna.
From here, you arrange your own transport back home. Of course, we can provide advice on this.

Questions about your participation?
Discuss it with the guide.

Preparation

We meet once before the trip. Live or digital. We pick the date by mutual agreement. Then we get to know each other. You’ll get an explanation of the materials and we’ll consider the map. With tea and coffee, we will discuss the trip and if possible set up the tent.

During the Trip

Tours with Arctic Adventure are Expedition Experiences. You experience what an expedition could be like. Sometimes spicy, sometimes easy. But always together.
We sleep in tents. You do this with someone else (or your partner) from the group. On summer trips, you can choose to bring your own tent. So then you can also sleep alone. On winter trips, at least two people always sleep in a tent for safety reasons.
Moving, cooking and navigating are done together. The beauty of small groups is that there is always a real and good group feeling. Sometimes there are friendships and reunions years later.

WhatsApp

We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.

Fitness

This ‘Expedition Experience’ is a Blue label expedition and is low-threshold in design. Still, basic fitness is necessary. Depending on the weather, it could be a spirited ride.

You don’t have to run a marathon. But assume you should be able to run 10 kilometers with a 10-kilogram backpack at a normal pace, 10 days in a row.
10 kilometers of continuous running is also good. Do you have any questions about this? If so, please contact the guide.
During the trek, there is mainly physical stress on the knees and lower back.

Sports Medical Examination

Are you older than 55 and want to participate in this trip? Then we strongly advise you to have a sports medical examination performed. Read more about the possibilities here.

Safety

During the trip we are in uninhabited territory. In case of emergency, our position can always be reached by rescue services via snowmobile.
The guide carries communication devices and both digital (GPS) and analog (Compass) navigation.
The guide has training in Wilderness Advanced First Aid and WGA I (Wilderness Guide Association).

Equipment

You get to borrow the full winter expedition equipment. Skis, backcountry ski boots, sleeping bags, sled. By arrangement, you are free to bring your own gear. Provided it meets our requirements.
We also provide group materials. Cooking utensils, tents, navigation and communication equipment.

Packing List

After your registration (or upon request) you’ll receive a detailed packing list.

Cross-Country Skiing

Do you want to read more (everything) about cross-country skiing? Because that’s what we’ll be doing during this expedition. Then read it on the site of toerlanglauftochten.nl.
