Expedition repair kit for the winter

Expedition repair kit for winter

It is very wise when going on an expedition with Arctic Adventures to always carry an expedition repair kit.
From experience, you do learn exactly what should be in it.
Along these lines, we’ll give you a hand with filling this expedition repair kit for winter.
Because if you haven’t gone on an expedition trip to, say, the Northern Lights before, you might want to forget some essentials.
And that would be a huge waste.
An expedition trip without experience can be fun, but only if you are well prepared!

Never forget to bring an extra pair of sunglasses

With the contents of such a kit, you should be able to repair basically anything that might break down during the expedition trip.
In doing so, however, it is important to keep an eye on weight.
A well-stocked repair kit doesn’t have to weigh much and you can keep it at or just under a kilo.
For example, never forget extra sunglasses.
How often does it happen that a pair of sunglasses falls somewhere in the snow and is then untraceable.
So always have a second one in your winter expedition repair kit.

Tape is also indispensable

If only for the blisters you get on an expedition trip.
Tape is also already indispensable, also to treat the blisters you get during the expedition.
Without tape, sometimes you just can’t continue your expedition journey and that would be a huge waste.
Also, don’t forget to carry screws.
These are often needed just to repair the skis, should they break down during the expedition or cross-country skiing.
Iron wire is also indispensable in that context, as are sewing thread and an Allen wrench to reattach all sorts of things properly.

By trial and error you eventually become wise

An expedition trip without experience quickly becomes an expedition trip with experience.
As stated, filling a repair kit is something you learn.
Through injury and disgrace, you really do become wiser in this case.
If you go on an expedition, be sure not to forget to bring a screwdriver.
It is important to be able to really tighten certain parts during the expedition.
Also don’t forget the extra clips for the carrying system you carry, as well as clips for the sled, and always bring repair materials for the insulating mats you lie on.

Repairs in the winter cold

With the winter repair kit, you should be able to repair basically anything

The expedition repair kit for winter should definitely not lack the instructions for the products you carry either.
Furthermore, never forget the prescription of medications from the first aid kit.

Expedition first aid kit

Have you ever heard of splint? A splint is essential in any expedition repair kit for winter.
The splint can help you if you develop problems on the arm or finger.
In fact, you can fix those limbs with a splint just fine.
So that splint belongs in a good first aid kit.
Also, always take extra parts of skis with you when you go on winter expeditions.
The basic idea should always be that you should be able to repair anything you have with you during the expedition with the repair kit.

Below you can read the transcript of the video recorded by Henk-Jan Geel about the expedition materials.

‘I am going to tell something about the repair kit I take with me on my arctic treks.
This is the repair kit.
Well it is quite a thing, but yes I also have to be able to use it to fix anything that can break.
It weighs about a kilo with all its contents and let’s see what’s inside.
What I carry with me at least is a spare pair of sunglasses the last thing you want is for your sunglasses to fall in the snow and you can’t find them again or they break.
So sunglasses are super handy to bring along.
Tape to tape your blisters with, to tape your foot with.
Super handy to have with you and I made a little box containing all sorts of handy things I need to fix stuff.
Screws I need to fix skis, iron wire thread, sewing thread is in there, an Allen wrench to tighten things.
Not for the ikea stuff, but it is the same size.
So that kind of stuff is all in here collected over the years exactly what I need all of it.
It also has a beet in it and with this screwdriver you can easily tighten things and screws properly by hand.
I have a drill with me.
In here are things like extra clips for you for your carrying system, clips for the sled, but also repair stuff for the thermarest insulation mats all the instructions for use or all the prescription of the medicines from my first aid kit I have in here.
A splint, a splint that’s actually something to fix your leg with on with it your leg is broken then you can fix your leg or an arm or a finger here with a splint you can fix your leg or an arm or a finger so that’s in there extra stuff for my skis so over time I’ve collected a few things and it’s all in here in such a way that I can be fully independent, just independent in the arctic and if things are broken that we can easily fix them.’
