Wandering where few have ever been.
Lapland stretches from the Atlantic coast in Norway to deep into Russia.
There are places where man has left his mark.
For example, in cities like Kiruna and Murmansk.
And there are large areas where hardly anyone comes and nature is still pure.
This makes Lapland one of the most unique places in Europe.
That’s where this tour is headed and through it.
This is the Pilot expedition to Treriksröset.
The three-country point of Sweden, Norway and Finland.
A three-country point in the middle of a big other country.
Sápmi, the land of the Sami.
Like the Sami, we know no borders on this trip.
The landscape rules and nature dictates.

The Three Countries Expedition takes you thirteen days through Sweden, Norway and Finland, ten of them in a tent. Solid fitness and experience with winter camping and skiing matter. A personal intake takes place beforehand.

This trip suits you if:

The route starts in the northernmost province of Sweden, Norrbotten.
We are dropped off far into the wilderness by snowmobiles.
After a few days, we cross the border.
We move on skis to the Norwegian Øvre Dividal.
The area on the border between Sweden and Norway is characteristic.
The Kjølen Mountains and tundra with its lakes make up the land.
What is barely there are plants and trees.
The area is at twice the height of the tree line.
We are therefore at the mercy of the whims of the weather.
Snowfall, wind and sun make it sometimes difficult and later breathtakingly beautiful.
During the trek, we form a team.
Together we are stronger than each of us individually.
The trek winds its way between mountains and lakes.
Along the border toward the tri-border point with Finland.
Along the way, we camp and cover 15 kilometers every day.
On Day 12, we return to civilization.
We look back on a world-class adventure.

A journey that challenges just a step further.
During the Three Countries expedition, we determine our own route based on the vagaries of the landscape. A landscape with mountains and lakes, but without vegetation in the far north of Sweden. Away from civilization, we are introduced to nature controlled by winter. Life waits for warmer temperatures yet we see reindeer. The unmistakable symbol of northern winter. A special trip of over 125 kilometers. This is not a trip for everyone. The tour is being offered for the first time this year. This trip therefore requires you to work as a team to perfect the route and overcome challenges wherever possible. That requires a good mind-set. The experience, peace and satisfaction in return more than make up for it.
During the expedition, you will experience the best of the Arctic. We follow the flow of the landscape. Through valleys and across rivers and lakes. The trek can be quite spicy at times. We cover 15 to 20 kilometers daily. So a little bit of biting through at times.
A true winter expedition that prepares you for perhaps even greater adventures.
We are almost two weeks into the winter nature of northern Sweden, Norway and Finland. Here you will be introduced to winter expeditions. We head to the tri-border point and seek the wilderness in and around Øvre Dividal. Far above the Arctic Circle and ravaged by the midwinter night and blessed by the midsummer sun.
When we are there, the sun sets at five in the afternoon. And doesn’t get up again until nine in the morning. Time enough to hunt for the Northern Lights. There are no guarantees on seeing the Northern Lights. We are there in ideal conditions, though. Above the Arctic Circle and in winter after dark.
Under the guidance of a professional guide, we enter the winter landscape. Completely expedition style.
Daytime is all about moving. We do that with touring langlauf skis. Special cross-country skis for walking in the great outdoors.
Equipment
You get to borrow the full winter expedition equipment. Skis, sleeping bags, tent. Together with the team, we are going to spend 11 days and 10 nights enjoying and maybe also suffering in the winter cold of Lapland. An experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Guaranteed.
The first night and the last night we sleep in a hotel or lodge.
Ten nights we sleep in an expedition tent.
The trip will take place when a minimum of 5 people register. Maximum number of participants is 7 people.

Pilot Expedition to the Treriksröset.
Day 1
We meet in Kiruna, Sweden. You arrange the trip yourself. You can fly, take a train or your own car. We meet at the hostel in Kiruna. Far in the north of Sweden. In the afternoon, we review the entire trip, prepare our gear and put the final touches on our trip.
Day 2
Fully charged after a night and breakfast in the hotel, we load our gear onto the snowmobiles. Today the tour starts, and we are dropped off at our drop-off point a few hours outside Kiruna. The ride is our first real introduction to the cold and vast nature.
After a brief snack for some extra energy, we hit the trail. That afternoon we are in no hurry and take our time getting used to the skis and pack. The first kilometers are covered after which we set up the tent for our first evening and night in the wilderness.
Day 3-11
These days are all about the trek. We get up before the sun rises. Or at least, that’s when the alarm goes off. Before you get out of your sleeping bag, you eat your breakfast in peace. With the first light of day, we’re ready. Skis on and pulk behind us. Ready for a new day. The route we follow goes from south to north with the tri-border point as our ultimate goal. Depending on the conditions, we may deviate and take a detour or a shortcut. Anything to ensure that on day 11 we can walk a lap around the tri-border stone.
When the sun sets around 4-5 PM, we look for a spot for our tent. Time to start preparing dinner.
Will the Northern Lights put on another light show tonight? The chances are high.
Day 12
The morning is like other mornings. By now we are in Finland and the routine is well established. We are ready in plenty of time for the last day in the snow. Around lunchtime, we see our final destination looming in the distance. The cottages of the Sami village of Kilpisjärvi.
Looking back as we make the final meters across the lake, we see the landscape we have traversed. In Kilpisjärvi, the taxi is waiting for us to take us back to Kiruna. In the evening, there is finally that well-deserved shower. We eat at a restaurant and indulge in the many flavors of this region. It will be a late night. Full of stories and experiences, we finally crawl into bed.
Day 13
Today is our last breakfast as a group. Transportation back home. The taxi awaits us at the hotel and takes us to Kiruna airport. At the end of the day, we return home tired but super fulfilled.

Preparation
We meet at least once before the trip. We do this in person as a group at a convenient location. We will pick the date and location by mutual agreement. Then we get to know each other. You’ll get an explanation of the materials and we’ll consider the map. With tea and coffee we will discuss the trip and let you get acquainted and practice with the group materials.
During the Trip
Tours with Arctic Adventure are Expedition Experiences. You experience what an expedition could be like. Sometimes spicy, sometimes easy. But always together.
We sleep in tents. You do this with someone else (or your partner) from the group. On summer trips, you can choose to bring your own tent. So then you can also sleep alone. On winter trips, at least two people always sleep in a tent for safety reasons.
Moving, cooking and navigating are done together. The beauty of small groups is that there is always a real and good group feeling. Sometimes there are friendships and reunions years later.
We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.
Condition & Experience
To participate in the Black Label tours, you must have done at least a Red Label tour in the winter or similar.
Before your participation is approved, the guide will contact you to assess your experience.
This ‘Expedition Major’ is a Black Label expedition and extremely challenging in design. Good fitness is necessary. Depending on the weather, it could be a spirited ride.
You don’t need to run a marathon. But assume that you should be able to walk 15 kilometers at a normal pace with a 15 kg backpack, 15 days in a row.
Running 15 kilometers continuously is also fine. Do you have any questions about this? Then please contact Henk-Jan Geel or Onno de Boer.
During the trek, the physical strain is mainly on the knees and lower back.
The trek can also be mentally challenging. Being able to challenge yourself in that area is definitely a plus. The guide will return to this in preparation.
Sports Medical Examination

Safety
During the trip we are in uninhabited territory. In case of emergency, our position can always be reached by the rescue services with a snowmobile or helicopter.
The guide has communication equipment and both digital (GPS) and analog (Compass) navigation.
The guide is certified in Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Arctic Survival and WGA II Arctic (Wilderness Guide Association)

Cross-Country Skiing

Basecamp
During the trek we will be supported from basecamp from the Netherlands. The guide is in daily contact with the base camp manager. This is also the first point of contact for home visitors.

Who Joins our Adventures?
Participants in our trips often sign up alone.
It happens that couples sign up.
The age of most participants is between 30 and 50 years.
There are certainly exceptions. The youngest participant was 23 and the oldest 66.
The male-female ratio is 50/50. The more challenging treks attract slightly more men. 60/40. But often the distribution is nicely balanced.
