Sometime in the fall of 2018, a message from Henk-Jan Geel of Arctic Adventure came along… it was more of a challenge! What’s stopping you from joining an Arctic Adventure? Well… actually nothing, but still good to discuss it over the phone.

He explained what it entails in a clear and calm manner. Yes, it can be cold (sleeping at -25 in a tent), but what you get in return?! In December, we had the introductory meeting with the other adventurers, which already marked the beginning of the adventure. Soon there was an app group that was used frequently, and Henk-Jan always answered our questions clearly and quickly.

The entire trip was professionally prepared and organized! It’s a total package that you get, so you only have to arrange your own things, and he even gives advice on that. The actual trip (Arctic Grand Slam February 2019) was unforgettable, indescribable, intense and magical.

Henk-Jan exudes a calmness, knowledge, attention and enthusiasm that is very motivating. There were moments of pushing boundaries and “out of my comfort-zone”, and I enjoyed every moment and felt safe. The physical exertion, the cold, the arctic landscape could be felt throughout my body. An eye-opener to experience and a trip that I can more than recommend to anyone who loves adventure and a challenge! I will definitely go again! The trip has had an impact on my way of life afterwards.

Coming home I thought; I slept “outside” at -25, so I can do that here in Amsterdam (on the 4th floor) with +2 as well. This year I have slept outside for more than 100 days, just because I can and especially because it refreshes my body and mind! The next step is to “swim” in open water for as long as possible.

At the end of October 2019 I swam for 15 minutes in 14 degrees. A boost for your whole body. And all that because of being awakened for 8 days in the Arctic region. I wish this for everyone.
