On day 16 of the Greenland expedition: a day of fine weather

Hello all, here is Marijke again. We are on day 16 of our Greenland expedition today and finally had a day with nice weather. No white-out and especially beautiful sunshine at the end of the day. This ensured that we were able to cover a lot of miles today, especially during a single shift around noon. We even managed to set a new daily record by walking over 24 kilometers today. Our goal is to be at DYE 2 in about six days.

Challenges and teamwork

During the expedition, we constantly alternate who goes ahead to track. We also challenge each other a bit to see who can get the most mileage. Despite these challenges, we have a very good time together. The team spirit is strong and we support each other when necessary.

High point and cold temperatures

At this point we are almost at the highest point of our trek, which is above 2,400 meters. This altitude means it is quite cold. We even expect it to go below freezing tonight. If you look at the photo of my arrival at the camp, you will see that I am wearing a different kind of clothing than the rest of the team. I chose to make this crossing in traditional clothing made of skins, furs and reindeer. This is really my thing. (Edit: the photo did not come across well via the satellite link)

The benefits of traditional clothing

The beauty of this traditional clothing that people used to walk around in is that it is surprisingly warm and blocks the wind. I also don’t have to change my clothes during the day. These clothes allow me to ventilate very well or retain heat without having to take off my jacket. While the men have to stop occasionally to put on or take off their coats, I can walk around comfortably all day in my traditional outfit. It is a nice experiment that is very rewarding and it is very special to be able to walk around here in these clothes.

Final thought

The Greenland Expedition is in full swing and we have overcome many challenges so far. Today’s beautiful weather helped us put in a lot of miles, and the team spirit is strong. I’m glad I made the choice to walk in traditional clothing, which gives me great comfort and warmth. We look forward to the days ahead and hope to reach our goal soon.
