What more could an adventurer want… waking up in a tent on your birthday, somewhere between Abisko and Kiruna, twenty degrees below zero, and having people sing for you. This may have been my best birthday ever. I was looking for adventure, arctic adventure, and after one call with Henk Jan, the decision was made for me. This is what I was looking for and needed.

I didn’t yet have the skills to do this adventure alone, and in Lapland I was able to fully rely on Henk Jan’s knowledge. I usually have a reasonable idea of the adventures I embark on, but this time I was completely wrong. And that is what made this expedition so special.

With like-minded people, people with the same mindset, I had a great adventure, an adventure I once dreamed of. Back to myself, where giving up and persevering, romance and sadness, a laugh and tears, willpower and doubt sometimes stood opposite each other.

I didn’t do it alone and realized that I really needed my teammates…. from dry pants to a pat on the head, a hand on a steep climb or a cup of steaming tea when you were feeling down. Thank you Henk Jan for this beautiful gift! Paul van Middelaar
