Testen branders Preparations and Delay: Expedition Update

Preparations and Delay: Expedition Update

Delay and preparations

The expedition is slightly delayed due to a problem with luggage that has not yet arrived. But fortunately, the delay is being put to good use. In fact, yesterday some final purchases were made. On the one hand, earplugs were found, always useful on the ice sheet, especially if someone is snoring or the wind is blowing hard and you are in a flapping tent. On the other hand, bullets were also found for a Remington 308 rifle.

Polar bears and shooting rules

To check for polar bears in the region, police were contacted. Although polar bears are occasionally seen, no polar bears have been spotted at the expedition site recently. This does not mean they are not there at all, but for now it is reassuring. The team has purchased 20 new bullets and hopes to still have them by the end of the expedition. It was remarkable that they could ask the police where they can shoot the bullets without any problems. In Greenland, it is even permitted to shoot outside the village, as long as it is done at a safe distance.

Crevasse rescue and materials

In addition to shopping and arranging bullets, the team also practiced crevasse rescue. They assembled the rad line and practiced the rescue procedure on a grassy field. This was not only for exercise, but also to escape the mosquitoes. In addition, the team went through the materials previously left behind by the Polar Experience team and guide Brecht. Among other things, they found sleds, cooking stoves, fuel and a sleeping bag. To make sure they don’t bring unnecessary items, they went through everything and what they don’t need will be sent back to Kangerlusuaq with a postal package.

Burners and communication

The fuel tanks have been filled and the burners tested. One pump was found to be defective, but the other three are working properly. In addition, the electronics we carry with us today, such as the satellite phone, inreach and the Personal Locator Beacon (P.O.B.) will be discussed in detail. It is important that everyone knows how to communicate with the outside world and raise the alarm or contact the Basecamp Manager in case of an emergency.

Productive day and planning

All in all, it was a productive day. The team prepares for the expedition and takes time to go over everything thoroughly and practice. Right now they are cooking their own dinner and for that they went to the village for a while to buy ingredients. Today another crevasse rescue is scheduled and they will dwell at length on the electronics they bring with them. There will be another update tomorrow and they will continue preparations for the expedition.
