An eventful day for the expedition team

The expedition team provided another update and what a day it was! A day full of challenges and surprises. An apotheosis without end. The team, consisting of Marijke, Wouter, Volkert and the writer of the blog, finally arrived at Point 660.

A day without end

On the day of the update, the team left at seven in the morning and did not reach Point 660 until ten to six in the evening. It was a day without end, full of challenges and surprises. They began in a dune landscape of small dunes and large dunes of snow and ice. After a few hours, they suddenly found themselves in a landscape full of deep crevasses called crevasses. It was difficult to get over, especially with a sled. They first tried the south side, but that was not possible. Finally, they turned back about two kilometers and decided to go via the north side. This went better, but they had to follow frozen streams with meters-high walls that ended in mulons, large holes in the snow where all the water disappears.

They had to carefully maneuver around these holes, which meant that they could no longer walk across the rivers and had to scramble and plod again. Finally, they saw Point 660 in the distance all day, but it was closed by a large glacial crevasse. At a good mile, team members saw tourists walking around at Point 660, who had been dropped off there. Waving to those tourists was useless, as the team was not noticed. After finding a snow bridge to cross the last crevasse, they could finally descend quietly to Point 660 and touch the first rocks.

An insane expedition

The expedition team covered a total of about 600 kilometers during this expedition. They faced rain, storms, snow, cold and heat. They have been hungry and are still supplementing. Despite all the challenges and hardships, it was an insanely cool experience and they are proud to have accomplished it. They will stay in Kangerlussuaq for one more day and will then return to the Netherlands via Copenhagen. On Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. they will arrive at Schiphol Airport and everyone is welcome to welcome them there.

Winter Adventure Fair

The writer of the blog also announced that he will give a talk on this expedition during Arctic Adventure’s Winter Adventure Fair. This fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Bant. In addition to the lecture, visitors can speak to the guides and participate in workshops and clinics. If you signed up for the newsletter, you will receive a discount code (Arctic 50) for 50% off the admission price.
