We leave from Schiphol Airport today. So the first day is mostly about flying to Iceland. Here we will arrive at around 3:30 p.m. local time.
Check into the hotel and go out for dinner. That’s what we’re going to do that night.
Today we will explore Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. Here we go to the Icelandic National Museum. A wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Iceland’s history and culture. A good start to a week of impressions and experiences.
We eat lunch at a traditional Icelandic lunch restaurant. Think salmon, rye bread and Skyr. In the afternoon you are free to walk around Reykjavik. Over dinner, we go over the final things for the trip ahead.
On Tuesday, a cab will be waiting for us in the morning to take us to the starting point of our trek.
Hanging up and heading south.
During 5 days we walk alternately through lava fields. About volcanic landscape and about the great divide that separates Europe and America. We encounter the occasional stream or lake to replenish our water supply. And always there is that red glow in the sky in front of us. That is our goal. The Fagradalsfjall volcano. This one gives the whole region a red glow at night from the boiling lava.
The last three days we have to bring water. We will no longer encounter water sources. So think about this when packing your backpack. The lighter the better….
On Saturday. After packing up our tent early in the morning, we headed into the Fagradalsfjall valley. We won’t be the only ones walking here now. Iceland’s premier attraction has come to life here. More impressive than the supporters of the Icelandic soccer team, more exuberant than the singer Björk. We are face to face with a real volcano in its full glory.
We take all day to enjoy this spectacle. This volcano erupted in 2021 and in 2022. Chances are that the volcano is now no longer active. It is still nature that dictates.
Sunday we come to rest. Because the last kilometers of our trip lead ns to the Blue Lagoon. A natural hotspring where we indulge in the thermal bath. We have earned it.
In the afternoon, a cab is waiting for us here to take us to Keflavik. The last night you can recover in a real bed and we eat our last meal together in a good Icelandic restaurant.
Monday in the morning, a cab will take you to the airport or to Reykjavik. The flight home is waiting for us.

Tours at Arctic Adventure are “Expedition Experiences. You experience what an expedition could be like. Sometimes spicy, sometimes easy. But always together.
We often sleep in tents. On summer trips, you can choose to bring your own tent. On winter treks, at least two people always sleep in a tent for safety reasons. Arctic Adventure regfelt the winter tents.
Moving, cooking and navigating we do together. The beauty of small groups is that there is always a real and good group feeling. Sometimes there are friendships and reunions years later.
We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.
You need a good level of fitness for this hike. It’s nice if you can hike with a backpack on. Think about 20 kilometers a day with a backpack of over 20 pounds.
Are you over 60 and want to participate in this tour? If so, we highly recommend you get a sports medical examination. Read more about the possibilities here.
During the trip we find ourselves in uninhabited territory a lot. In case of an emergency, our position can always (but sometimes difficult) be reached by the rescue services.
The guide carries satellite communications equipment and both digital (GPS) and analog (Compass) navigation.
The guide has training in Wilderness Advanced First Aid and guide training with the Wilderness Guide Association (WGA).
There is a Basecamp in the Netherlands that can be contacted for those left behind.
