In this blog post, we&#8217;ll take you into the world of polar travel and specifically the preparations for our expedition across Greenland&#8217;s ice sheet. <\/p>\n<h2>The Team and Route<\/h2>\n<p>Our expedition, planned for the summer of 2025, will follow a unique route from east to west. The team, consisting of three Dutch members &#8211; David, Ronnie, Michiel &#8211; and an American, Susanne, is led by me, Henk-Jan Geel. We&#8217;ll start our adventure in the small village of Isortoq and after a short boat trip, we&#8217;ll begin our actual journey on the ice sheet. Our goal is to reach the other side within 30 days, where we&#8217;ll be picked up at Point 660 by a 4-wheel drive that will take us to Kangerlussuaq on Greenland&#8217;s west coast.   <\/p>\n<h2>Logistical Challenges and Equipment<\/h2>\n<p>The logistical preparation for such an expedition is no small feat. Everything starts with collecting and checking the necessary equipment in our storage facility in Utrecht. From there, everything is shipped to Greenland. This includes not only personal gear such as sleeping bags, clothing and skis, but also group equipment like tents, burners, cooking stoves and a first aid kit.   <\/p>\n<p><strong>Communication and safety<\/strong> are crucial during such expeditions. We&#8217;ll carry advanced communication equipment including VHF radios and a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). Additionally, a weapons permit is necessary as we&#8217;ll carry a firearm for protection against potential polar bear attacks.  <\/p>\n<h2>Food Supply on the Ice<\/h2>\n<p>Food is your energy source in the harsh conditions of the ice sheet. We carry approximately 1.2 kilos of food per person per day, plus about 200 milliliters of fuel for cooking. This total weight fortunately decreases as we consume more, making pulling the pulkas somewhat easier.  <\/p>\n<h2>Physical Preparation<\/h2>\n<p>Physical preparation is just as important as logistics. I regularly train with team members by running while pulling car tires. This method simulates pulling a sled and helps us get in shape for the actual physical challenges of the expedition.  <\/p>\n<h2>Support from Home Base<\/h2>\n<p>While we&#8217;re on the ice sheet, a support team remains active. Our Basecamp Manager Wouter plays a crucial role in this. He helps with logistical support from the Netherlands and can handle essential matters such as rebooking flights.  <\/p>\n<p>We also receive daily weather updates thanks to our meteorologist Dirk van As. This information is essential for anticipating storms or other extreme weather conditions. Additionally, a medical team stands ready to provide remote advice on medical issues during the expedition.  <\/p>\n<h2>The Role of Technology in Modern Expeditions<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting how technology now integrates into expedition leadership. For instance, I use a system where I can record updates via my phone that are then automatically transcribed by AI software. This makes it possible to communicate efficiently without having to type everything myself.  <\/p>\n<p>This combination of thorough preparation, physical training, and technological support makes it possible to undertake this extreme journey.
