A very relevant question, which I am happy to answer. I used to always answer that I was experiencing the weather and not necessarily seeing the climate. But in recent years, I have witnessed changes in the polar regions where I travel regularly. And the interesting thing is that you don’t even have to go to the polar regions to see climate change. Even in the Netherlands, there are clear signs of change.

More extreme weather and its consequences

The weather is becoming more erratic and extreme. Take my trips to northern Sweden, for example. Last winter I experienced a 20-degree difference there in just two days. On Wednesday it was -24 degrees and two days later it was only -5 degrees. These kinds of extreme swings are becoming more common. This makes planning expeditions more difficult and also brings danger. Weather forecasts are less reliable and can greatly affect our activities.

Changes in the polar regions

Clear changes can also be seen in the polar regions themselves. For example, the Greenland Ice Sheet recorded rain for the first time, when it should normally be snowing there. Rain causes the snow to melt faster, which has a major impact on the landscape and ecosystems in these areas. The climate is changing and this affects everything and everyone living in these areas.

What can we do?

As the owner of Arctic Adventure, I want to do my part to preserve nature and combat climate change. Therefore, I decided to join my travel agency with 1% for the planet. This means that I donate 1% of Arctic Adventure’s sales to environmental and nature-related charities.

Protect Our Winters

One of the organizations to which I contribute financially is Protect Our Winters. This American organization is dedicated to preserving winter sports areas and promoting sustainability projects in these areas. The goal is to keep winter sports accessible to everyone while reducing the impact on the environment.

Rewilding Europe

Another organization I lend my support to is Rewilding Europe. This organization aims to bring back more wilderness in Europe. For example, they are removing dams in rivers so that nature can once again have free rein. This fits perfectly with my vision that as humanity we should walk hand-in-hand with nature and embrace it rather than try to control it.

Trees for All

Finally, at Arctic Adventure, I offset the CO2 emissions from air travel of both the guides and participants on my trips. I do this by partnering with Trees for All, an organization dedicated to reforestation and offsetting carbon emissions. In this way, I do my part to reduce the impact of our travels on the climate.

Conclusion

Climate change is a reality we cannot ignore. There are clear signs of change both in the Netherlands and in the polar regions. As the owner of Arctic Adventure, I feel a responsibility to do my part to ensure conservation and combat climate change. By joining my travel agency with 1% for the planet and contributing financially to organizations such as Protect Our Winters, Rewilding Europe and Trees for All, I hope to make a positive impact and inspire others to do their part as well. Let’s work together and ensure a more sustainable future for our planet.

🗺️ Our live position on Greenland.
📢 Read all previous posts.

Sign up for the Expedition Newsflash.

During the expedition, receive alerts of new blogs in your mail.
[mc4wp_form id=”4505″]

Discover the impact of climate change on polar regions and how Arctic Adventure is contributing to a sustainable future.

[417

post-15198","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-greenland-2023
["GET
